Skymaster fly-in

Rex Damschroeder,The owner/operator of the Fremont, Ohio airport ( 14G ),has asked me to announce to all skymaster owners that he is planning a Skymaster fly-in on August 1st and 2nd 2015.
A picnic dinner is planned for Saturday evening with a speaker and a chance to share our stories. Camping and other lodging is available.
Rex has a Skymaster and there's three more on the field. ( we're nuts! )
If you can make it a date. Contact me for more info.

I'm at the Moraine Airpark just south of Dayton. I'm sure I can make it up there in August if not sooner to see the fleet. 4 Skymasters are based at Fremont?

Hurray for you! Let's get the ball rolling. We've also gotten a commitment from Mike Jackson (the author of "Naked In Danang") to speak to us of his experiences flying O-2's in Vietnam.
I don't spend a lot of time at my computer, so forgive me if I don't reply immediately to inquiries.
The phone # to the Fremont airport is (419) 332-8037. Ask for Rex

Got my postcard reminder this week. Thanks for sending these out. Should be a great gathering. Is there camping available on the airport?

Sorry for the late reply. I've been farming.
Camping is at the airport. Rex has some private hangers with showers that can be used.
We are also checking with local hotels for group rate availability.
If you or anyone else would like a room, please let me or Rex know so we can get a count. Thanks, T.W.

Fly in @ Ohio

Hello Skymaster Owners.
I'm rebuilding a 1965 C337, BUT won't be flying by August. So if you all don't mind I'm planning on flying my (Freshly rebuilt) 1969 C172. I'm looking forward to meeting more C337 owner/pilots! Hope to see you all there.

Jerry, Toward your question about the agenda. Herb probably described it best as a gathering.
We plan on starting the arrivals with a meet and greet, right after noon on sat. Aug.1st. Campers can get set up and arraignments made for hotel transportation (please let us know ahead of time ).
The cookout will start at 5:00 pm, with Mike Jackson speaking afterwords.
We're having a campfire Sat. Evening (weather permitting) with Bill Hayes,an aviation attorney, musician, and Skymaster owner, providing entertainment.
Sunday morning we'll provide a light breakfast when we get around to it and John Russman of Detroit agreed to talk with us about Skymaster maintenance.
Our plans are done by noon, so your plans can take over.
The goal is for this to be a low cost/ fun affair.
Prepare to share your joys and concerns of the 337 , and wake up the town of Fremont

A big thanks to Rex and his crew for a great Skymaster flyin. Great food, good fuel price but most of all a nice group of very very nice folks. Great story by LtCol Jackson as he described his tour of duty in VN flying the O2A plane. Over all I rate this meet a four star performance. Got to see old friends and meet new ones. Thanks Rex!

Cheers

Rex and crew did a fantastic job welcoming the Skymaster Owners and Pilots. They made us feel like family. Home cooked food, gracious service and a friendly atmosphere all the way around. Mike "Scoop" Jackson was a treat to listen to, you need to get his book "Naked in Da Nang" all about flying the O2 Skymaster in Vietnam.

Always great to have more Skymasters but I was so glad that we went and didn't miss this wonderful event. Thanks to Rex and his team, top notch job guys

Herb just cost me money

Bummed I couldn't make the fly-in....sounds like it was great.
On a related note - there is a cool annual river float event this weekend in my hometown of Laughlin, NV (yes, moved from NC a ways back)....if anyone flys in their Skymaster to KIFP, park next to mine and ping me.

Herb - you cost me money with your post. I clicked the link to buy the book, and then ended up on Amazon for the next 30 mins buying a lot of other things, just because i was there :)

Mayhemxpc 08-03-15 08:05 PM

Regrets for not making it. First time it was close enough to come to, but the weekend after OSH was just not in the schedule. (That said, if my wife and kids had come back one day later in their leisurely drive back from AirVenture, I would have been there.) Maybe next year!

On behalf of Rex
I want to give a shout out to all of you who took the time and burned your gas to make this years gathering such a joy for us. You're certainly a humble and fun group.
I regret not taking the microphone to tell you a little about Rex.
He is passionate about Skymasters, aviation in general, and keeping his family airport thriving. He usually has free hotdogs on Saturdays for anyone stopping by,and he is currently starting a flight academy for young teens at a ridiculously low price to get them started.
Well thanks again, good show! If anyone can order up the same great weather for next year I think we can talk him into doing it again.

Future Skymaster Fly-In

We at Commodore Aerospace Corp at Wiley Post airport in Oklahoma City offer to host a future SOPA fly-in in 2016 or later. I think we hosted one in 2004 and had a good turn out. We offer to share our expertise and knowledge of 337 and 0-2 aircraft as well as host fun activities. Let me know what you think. Don Nieser at 405-503-4686 or nieser.02.337parts@juno.com.

hharney 12-09-15 09:07 AM

Don
Thank you for your offer and the fly-in you hosted was a fantastic event. It would be great to come back over and tap into your vast knowledge of these birds. I think the best part is just getting all the owners and pilots together but doing it at your place would be the icing on the cake

Thank you

James Bennon 12-09-15 04:01 PM

Don - we would love to come to your place for a get together.

Skymaster Fly-In

My wife and I would be glad to host a SOPA Fly-in to Wiley Post airport in Oklahoma City. The best time of the year is Sept-Oct maybe first week of Nov time frame 2016. We have the week of 5 Sept. booked but all the rest of Sept and Oct 2016 and the first week of Nov 2016 is open for us. We are taking two 0-2A aircraft to the air show in Las Vegas at Nellis AFB 11-13 Nov 2016. Please let us know and we can plan a fun and informative meeting.
