Instrument Rating - Finally!
 

I just had to tell someone (and warn others)...

I passed my Instrument Check Ride last night.

What a lot of work for two little words on your license - Instrument Airplane.

I can not say enough about the choice of the 337 as an instrument platform... it has really proved to be extremely stable and made the rating in a multi-engine, complex and high performance aircraft more easily attainable than in any other that I can imagine.


So, come on marine layer... I'm outa here.

I agree with you on your assessment of the airplane, very stable, and even the simulated engine out approach wasn't difficult.

when you do IFR rating in USA do they teach point to point navigation using RMI or GPS pointer, ie from a known radial and dist to a target radial and dist.

I understand the question, but did not have to demonstrate that particular skill.

The experience started with an oral exam that lasted nearly 2 1/2 hours. It was thorough and informative. I actually enjoyed it (after it was over).

The check ride consisted of a normal takeoff (although I had practiced zero/zero takeoffs often), and then about 90 minutes of turns, climbs, descents, turns, climbing turns, turning descents, steep turns, timed turns, unusual attitudes, more turns, rapid and repeated changes in altitude and direction, simulated engine failure (just spooled back to neutral), holds, and three approaches (VOR, ILS with engine out to full stop and an LDA with AI failure).

So, I did my first IFR to VFR on top last week. It was way cool! I still haven't done a real approach, but hope to soon.

I passed mine on a Tuesday, and the next day we left for the Bahamas, for the fly-in. It was the first time my wife had flown with me in months. Somewhere south of INDY, we went solid IMC, and did ILS into BNA. It impressed the heck out of her when we popped out of the clouds, runway straight ahead.

You will enjoy flying so much more, now that you are IFR rated.
