Rear Muffler - NA

my 1965 337 is in for annual. Just got news that the rear muffler failed inspection...sent for "repair" along with the transition pieces.

Total cost for the repair (with new clamps)...$2400 parts only.

Is this out of line? Any other experiences with this hunk of steel?

Thanks

Way too much, you can buy one outright for less than $2K from Wag Aero:

Ouch

I should learn to do a bit more homework.

Bill, I have had my rear muff repaired at least a dozen times. Normally costs around $400-600 dollars. I had mine totally rebuilt once (they had to use part of the original) and it was only $1200. I have bought new also for less than $2000.

Money Back?

Why don't you try printing out this thread and sharing it with your supplier? Maybe they will realize how far they are out of line and return some of your money.

It never hurts to try. If they don't, maybe you could share their name with the forum and prevent other people from being taken.

I bought a new remanufactured rear muffler for $263, on Ebay.
Always look around.

My turbo 337 rear exhaust was thin and a part cracked on removal, so I just had it replaced entirely. The whole rear exhaust was $4,900 in parts! I've heard Dawley may have been able to do it for more like $2,500, but... So believe it or not, your cost was in line.

Clarify - A totally new exhaust for rear, turbo, was $4k+

Maybe I got taken, maybe not. Everything on the rear engine was replaced with "new."

Maybe you DID do OK

If you replaced the entire exhaust system for that price, I definately want to know where you bought the parts. For that job you got a great deal. I thought all you replaced was the muffler. $2400 is a steal for the entire system!

I just pulled my rear muffler off. It looks good...no cracks. But what else should I do to make it last? Should I get it sandblasted and then painted with high-temp paint? Or is there something else to keep it from surface corrosion?

I talked with Wall Colmonoy at Oshkosh. I was standing at the US Coast Guard booth talking to Jenny Stack and right next door was a rear muffler for a Skymaster. Pricing was very reasonable for new but I think this company will repair also. They have some kind of heat treatment they use also.

Yeah, What a pain! Every time we snuck that muffler into the Coast Guard Booth Sue (the Wall Colmonoy lady) caught us and made us return it.

Speaking about the rear muffler, does everyone's rear muffler aft support rub on the engine's oil pan?
