Front Cowl Flap Motor 1976 P337
 

Front Cowl Flap motor is not operating. At least it is stuck open, but need to get it fixed. Is there a replacement part out there? Do we rebuild? if so, who can rebuild?

Check the wiring and switches first if the motor needs rebuild try George’s Electric in Sacramento Ca

I had the rear go out. the problem was the wires right as they enter the motor had become flaky due to the action of opening and closing the flap. try wiggling these wires and see if the motor works. If so its an easy fix to take the motor end off and re-solder these. I went the whole rebuild route only to discover this was the actual problem when the rebuilt motor also didn't work. Georges did the rebuild and didn't catch this btw.

If it is toast and you don't mind the downtime, Bob Bena of RLB Accessory Service rebuilds them. Mine took six weeks, but he was waiting on parts. Mine was totally fried from the electrical short my airplane experienced after takeoff. It looked like the motor had caught on fire. $255, it looks new now.

I ended up buying one off the shelf without the core as I needed to dispatch on a trip. My mechanic found it through a supplier for $1500 and $500 for no core. $2K was better than anything else we could find. I'm keeping the one Bob rebuilt on the shelf as these are hard to find.

Those motors are very simple units. Don't be afraid to take it apart. Most likely requires only cleaning. Just be carefully re the head with gears in it.
