windshield hot plate

I am looking at a 75 P337 wired for, but without the hot plate. I need some information regarding avilability of hot plates. Living in the great lakes area I will need one. I currently fly a 206 with TKS and it works great, But I am considering a change to the skymaster.

Any information is appreciated

I have this vague recollection that they are unbelievably expensive, but I don't remember where I picked that up. Fortunately, we haven't had to replace one (yet).

It would be interesting to know what they are going for now days.

I bought one in early 2004 as there was never one with the plane. Did a search on the part number 1513460-5 using a specialist parts search facility. I found one from TEX-AIR Parts Inc. (817) 624-9882 and paid about $3400 as I recall. They provided great service.

Tule River and several others had them but for higher prices, closer to $5,000 if memory service me correctly.

That sounds about right.

I wanted to think it was around $7,000 for a new one from Cessna (list), but I was wary of posting that number since my memory is so vague.

I just remember thinking #!*#, you could get a whole heated glass windshield for a 421 for that price.

When I sold my '75 337P I had the hot plate, but since I wasn't IFR rated at that time I never used it and put it in a box and forgot about it. Several years later when cleaning out the garage I found it and wondered if it was worth anything, so I took it down to the airport and asked my mechanic if it had any value. At that time, new from Cessna they quoted $2,600, but it would take up to 8 months to get one from the factory since they waited until they had orders for several of them before they would make them. I was told that between the laminated layers is a fine mesh made with gold. That hot plate was sold to the buyer of my 75P who lived in CA and many years later the plane now belongs to Jerry DeSantis.

I didn't find any gold on it but many times I found it to be worth it's weight in gold. I use it quite a lot in Michigan weather.

BTW, I seen hot plates just like it on other types of aircraft. Don't narrow your search for one only to Skymasters! Check to determine what other Cessna aircraft use it. I'm not sure but check the 206, 210, 335, 340 and 414 type. You might find one at a reduced cost.

According to Premier Aviation's web site. (iwantcessnaparts.com), the list price is $3939 and they sell them for $3742.05. I've bought a number of parts from them at very good prices, so I was surprised that their discount on this part is only 5%. Cessna has the hot plate in stock, again according to the web site.

Ya'll might try Pearson Air in Olympia Wa.. They give a better discount than anyone else. 1-800-562-6374
