Found hangar. Fingers crossed. Out.

OBK, Operation Brothers Keeper, is volunteering pilots to help fly planes out.

I have space in my hangar, however, Kalamazoo is a long ways away. The guy who was my co-pilot in Louisiana keeps his 172 outside, in Miami, as well.

Good Luck, Ernie.

I am up in KSGJ waiting and waiting. Figured it was not worth crossing my fingers. Katrina was too close!

Heading back down your way Tuesday.

Bob

Bob:

So very good to hear from you. We have missed you. Assuming we're OK after Wilma, planning on going to Great Harbour on Tuesday of next week (November 1). If you're going to be in Treasure Cay, let me know and I'll try to stop by.

Again, very glad you're back!

Ernie

PS. For newcomers, Bob -- along with Pete Somers -- is one of the most knowledgeable people on Skymaster electrical stuff. He's a real asset to this Board and we hadn't heard from him in a while.

I second what Ernie said about Bob.

Need a Report if Possible

Ernie:

How did you fare?

Do you need any assistance? Is there anything we can do?

I heard from someone I know that in his part of Miami, they lost power at 4 AM, yesterday, as did the hospital his wife worked at. The hospital was on generator as of last night.

Any news from FL??
I heard that TMB is closed, with damage, FLL is closed, with damage. Anyone seen any pictures?

Ernie Martin 10-26-05 08:59 PM

Working by candlelight from my daughter's laptop. Lost power and phones about 6:30 AM Monday, in the midst of raging winds. No significant damage to house (a few roof tiles) but lots of trees down. Everyone safe. Phone service came back this PM, but still no power. Aircraft survived without damage but no electric power at TMB to raise hangar door. So we wait. Water service uninterrupted, which is good, but we used the last of the hot water today, so cold showers starting tomorrow. On the plus side, it's been cool since the hurricane passed (75 high, 55 low) so it's been pleasant without air conditioning.

Everything is closed for lack of power, so we manage with what we have. Thank god for a cheap freezer I have which is not frostfree -- the 2" of ice it had on all the shelves is still keeping things cold. We cook things on the barBque as they thaw inside the freezer.

All in all, not too bad. Oh, and I moved most of the beer into the freezer as soon as we lost power, so the beer is still ice cold!

Thanks for your expressions of concern.

Well Ernie,

You obviously know what's important to keep cool! Hang in there! We were without electricity for 10 days after Isabel came through Virginia (two years ago). Had to steal a UPS from the computer to put a 25 watt lamp in the middle of the table. This allowed us to see what kind of beer we were drinking from the iced down cooler.

We were fortunate that a friend loaned us a 10 KW generator. This allowed us to enter the bathroom without getting that stupid feeling. It's amazing how long it takes to break the habit of turning the light on upon entering.

WebMaster 10-27-05 09:40 AM

OH, what a quandry. In Ernies situation, part of me would say, let's get a generator, get the hangar open, and get out of dodge... On the other hand, there's no power at the house, and everyone knows there's no power at the house, so I'm going to stay here and keep an eye on the homestead.

At least the beer is cold.

If you need anything, Ernie, just holler. We'd have to find a section of un-used road to land on, but we can get there.
