Hi guys My plane has been down from the middle of April. We can't seem to solve the mag problem on the rear eng. I hope to have her going by the weekend if so count me in.

Mag probs?

Kevin B.,

What are the symptomatic problems with the rear-engine mags on your '76 P-model? Give us a run-down, as I don't think you've mentioned this prior. How much time on these puppies since overhaul/new, or whatever?

Well they had 400hrs when we bought it we put 280 hrs on them this year The rear eng started to run rough right after rotation out of St Ignace Mi in IMC at night over lake Huron sure was glad I had the front Eng.
I had the right one rebuilt and upon run up the left one failed. now after having that one rebuilt it now back fires. Yes it is timed correctly plus now the rear tach does not work. sooooo the saga continues

Maybe next time you should look at getting TCM exchange units, they're warranted and usually reliable.

As to the tach problem with the rear, it's most likely the wiring connector splice about a foot or so from the mag, unless the goofy that rebuilt it did something with the second set of points.

Let us know who rebuilt them so the rest of the 337 owners can steer clear!

You might want to check the P leads real well. Look carefully where the shielding ends and make sure its not able to touch the center conductor. make sure its not cut through anywhere, like where they go through the firewall. You might want to try running it with the P leads disconnected. If you do be careful for the mags will be hot.

Tach Problem

I recently had this problem on a rebuilt mag from Kelley Aerospace. The problem was that the tach breaker points were improperly assembled. An insulating washer was in the wrong place. This caused a dead short across the tach points no matter whether the points were open or not. Easy to check. Just test continuity across the two tach leads from the mag while slowly rotating the prop by hand. They should alternate between open and closed circuit. If not, then the problem is with the tach points. If this tests OK, then the problem is somewhere between the tach and the mag (probably the previously mentioned connectors).

Well my tech called late last night says that in purrrs like a kitten so I hope to test fly her tonight. We had to re build both mags again. It had missing washers missed oplaced flet washers mixed parts ect ect needles to say I will not pay the 1st guy that rebuit them !!!

QC

So much or "Quality Control" in the field! Was this a private individual. specializing in aircraft component rebuilds, or a regular FBO somewhere? Makes one wonder how many other folks suffered the same fate. Maybe Kevin should start a separate section called "Customer Satisfaction"...

It was a FBO that services all types of GA including jets and ect.
It's true you get what you pay for!!!!!!

"It's true you get what you pay for!!!!!!".... well NOT quite. In this case you didn't get squat! Instead, I'd say you got the Royal Screwing. You'd think these turkey's would TEST the mags before releasing them to you like they did.

Just curious, what was their 'charge' for doing it all wrong??
