Electric Tachometer

Observing intermittent problems with duel electric tachometer. Has anyone experienced similar problems? Can instrument shop capable of making repairs be recommended?

Mark,

In most cases, this is a wiring problem, or a problem with the magneto pickup. If you use the Search function on web page searching for "tach" you will find lots of messages about this. Here is an example.

One member suggested Ebay as a source for a replacement instrument.

There are also some messages about the indicator being faulty, obviously that could be the case for you.

I'm sure others will have suggestions as well.

I've just been through this problem on both tachs and discovered that 9 times out of 10, the problem is in the mags or wiring - not the tach unit itself. I did find a place in Arkansas that will overhaul the tach unit for a resonable fee but didn't need it. My 337 is a G model so yours may have a different mag system.

Start in the mags first and work forward (or backward as the case may be) is my suggestion - assuming your system is similar to the G model.

Jim,

Thanks for your post. Would you mind sharing who the overhauler in Arkansas is, and how to contact them?

Thanks,

Kevin

Kevin:

Took me a little while to find it but here it is:

Rudy's Instruments in Ft. Smith, Arkansas; 479-474-8759.

They told me (November '03) that it'd be $300-$400 to repair a tach.

I never needed a repair since the problem was in the points or pickups in the mags .

I got the information from Owen Bell in Nashville when I inquired about a replacement tach.

THANKS! I think we all appreciate you taking the time to look it up.
