Can a VAR crank be put into a light case? Or does a VAR crank require the heavey case?

Also, how can I determine if the case is light and or heavey?

Yes. No. The "heavy" case will have reinforced bolt holes along the top case seam resulting in a scalloped edge, the "light" case will be flat along the length of the top case seam.
