Master & Ground Solenoid
I am having some small electrical problems which I think may be due to excessive resistance in electrical lines to the landing gear electrical motor, probably in the master solenoid. Many of you recall that GMAs, among others, recommends that the solenoid be changed every 3-5 years. My problem is this: when I go to get the part number, there seems to be`two, one for the battery and one for the ground. Now Í am clueless. I know that there is one for each engine starter, and then there is the master or battery solenoid mounted on the firewall near the other two, so what is this other one, a ground solenoid or contactor? What does it do? Can anyone help? The P/N I have for the battery solenoid (which I think is the master solenoid) is S1580-1 and the ground solenoid is S1577-1. Should I change both?

i had the same problem several years ago, replaced all four of them (one for each starter, master and for the gear) got them through a cessna oh shop). if my memory serves me correct thay are all identical and less than fourty bucks ea. sorry not much help without a parts book.

Solenoids
Ernie
You should have a battery or master solenoid and a solenoid for ground power which is mounted under the battery and the 2 starter solenoids. The master and ground power solenoids have a continous rating and the starter solenoids have a intermittant ratings thus the different P/N's Hope this helps Kim |
Thanks, Kim. Could not figure out how there could be a solenoid for the ground (as opposed to "hot") side of the electrical circuit, since I knew that the minus post of the battery is hard-wired to frame. Now I know what they mean by "ground". Bought the battery solenoid by phone from Yingling and will install when it gets to Miami (I´m still in Europe).
Hope to see you at this year´s meeting. Ernie |
Ernie, if you are in England or near enough to me near Stratford, please give me a call and I will buy you a beer.

Thanks, Dave, but I´m in Spain and going home (Miami) tomorrow. Next time.
