I had a similar experience, many years ago. I was working for a bearing manufacturer in CT, in 1981. I had a Mercury outboard motor, and I determined it needed some bearings. Small bearings. I checked with the local Mercury dealer and learned that he would have to order them, and the costs were about $12.00 each. I remembered that one of our divisions sold to Mercury, in fact we had several outboard motor test cells. I did the interchange, and our selling price to Mercury was on the order of $0.80 each. A tremendous markup, to $12.00. Fortunately, I was able to get samples, so the cost to me was $0.00.
