Magnetos
Ok, so here I sit with 700 hr stock normal I.O. 360 engines. The ignition seems to be running very good...BUT...The current trend seems to be "send the mags off at about 500hrs" for overhaul. Is this a good idea? Is it different between Bendix or Slick mags? I have heard the opinions of two experienced IAs, now, I'd like to hear other owners' opinion.

Just a newbie question:
How many magnitoes are on IO 360 engines and of what brand mostly. |

Two mags per engine; typically Bendix but some have been changed over to Slick

Just sitting here I can't cite the reference without looking it up, but in my case - operating in compliance with Part 135 rules (terms of my survey contract) - my mags (Bendix) come off for inspection (IRAN) every 500 hours. May not apply under Part 91; again, unsure whether it's a recommendation or an actual AD....

Recommended for Part 91, not required

Under Part 91 it is recommended, the TCM I.O. 360 owners manual says Bendix mags "should" or "need" to be overhauled at 500 hr interval.

Whats the cost of overhauling a mag vs installing an electronic ignition?

$750 to $1000 in most cases. Electroaire are in the $3000 range

Surefly seems like they intend to put Electroaire out of business.
$1695 vs. $4400? I just checked, those are the current prices for a Cont. 360 setup. And the install is much simpler with the SureFly, it just replaces the existing mag (after adding a power circuit), whereas the ElectroAire requires the additional installation of a magnetic crank position sensor. Mags
FOR: JB78382.
Hello. I'm pretty sure the 500 Hour is an INSPECTION not an OVERHAUL, especially under the Part 91. Your local A&P mechanic can do the inspection without much trouble. Although the mags are difficult to remove/install, time consuming maybe 6-8 hours total. Especially if the A&P hasn't have much Skymaster maintenance time. Hope this helps. Regards.
