Question Non Var cranks

I am considering the purchase of a P-model 337 however both engines are Factory Remans prior to the VAR crank. FRT 800 hrs done in 1989 Rear 1200hrs done in 1986.
How does that effect the purchase and the value when it is time to exchange or overhual the engines? What does the AD say as to when they have to be replaced? I don't what to make a $1000,000.00 mistake!!

On the price issue my idea is to subtract between $2,000 and $4,000, but I'm not sure that's right so maybe others will respond. On what the AD says, I believe that it requires you to replace the crank whenever it is next exposed. So, theoretically, you don't suffer the expense until you have to overhaul or otherwise tear-down the engine (such as for a prop strike).

As I read the AD, the non VAR crank has to be replaced at TBO. and not when it is next exposed.otherwise I wouldnt be having the problem of replacing two perfectly running engines.

Prob have VAR Crank

I have been dealing with the VAR crank issue recently, so thought I would put my two cents in.

I would actually expect factory remans done in the 80's to have the VAR cranks.

I read the AD and some supplemental information on the TCM web site. It indicated that the factory started using the VAR cranks in overhauled engines in 1978. I also spoke with a rep. He said as far has he knew, all factory remans done since the early 80's had the VAR cranks.

I would agree but the serial #s on the plane's engines are about 100 #s below the cut off the factory has published

I have now referred to my copy of CSB 96-8. It was in 1978 TCM began the VAR process Crankshafts made under the VAR process are identified by the raised letters VAR forged into the crank.. The VAR forging identification is on the number 3, 7 or 9 crankshaft cheek. There is a list in the AD of all tcm rebuilt engines with certain serial numbers or higher if they were reman'd with the VAR crank. If you can't get the AD, let me know your serial number.
