Largest (safe) tablet size?
Naturally, having a sturdy mount is essential, and dimensions of the pilot can factor in. But for most of us in the "average" height and size range, how large of a tablet will safely sit on the center of the yoke without posing a danger (hitting your hands, flopping off/over, etc)? I myself would be looking a 51 year-old yoke, to be specific.

I use iPad 6th gen (A1954) 9.7” in RAM mount—works great, lasts a long time.

Thank. And good to hear-- same size I'm fixing to use, in Samsung form. I assume that's in portrait orientation at that size?

The RAM mount can go either way I think, but I've only ever used it in landscape mode.
77 G model yoke. Edit: add/remove photos (wrong photos) Last edited by Learjetter : 06-10-20 at 02:20 AM. |

iPad Mini
I am using an iPad mini with a ram mount - sits right in the middle of the yoke, just a little off-center to the right so it does not impede the left hand on the yoke. I will attach a photo later this week so you can see. I went with the mini so that I would not have the tablet block out any switches or instruments, but a full size iPad would work as well - I am just a little particular.

Be careful when you attach the yoke mount to the yoke torque tube. The Skymaster yokes push farther into the panel than some other Cessnas. It's possible to smash the mount into the panel and hit/bend/break important stuff.
Looks like my plane's previous owner found this out the hard way. The DG knob shaft is bent. |

I use an iPad Mini 4 oriented in portrait rather than landscape, which matches the route of flight and charts better. The following RAM components are all size "B"; the prices are MSRP.
With the Mini's smaller profile, I have no trouble seeing anything on the panel. I have full access to the electric trim, and the factory autopilot and trim disconnect switch inside the control "horn" yokes. See the attached image. As a note, I bought a factory sealed Mini4 128GB on eBay for less than $250, specifically for ForeFlight use. It has plenty of horsepower and storage space. |
