Consider this. How much does your airplane weigh when you pull 2g's? Answer: twice as much as it's own gross weight.

Therefore, the FAA allows airplanes to fly over their gross weight for ferry flights with a ferry tank installed. Why! Because the airplanes are designed to be flown over their gross weight. But. And this is a big but. Flying is limited to 1g. So it has to be a no turbulance day...until you burn off enough fuel to be below the certified gross weight.

So, how does adding wing tips increase max gross weight? Does it require a new spare? No, it doesn't. So, the airplane was designed for weights above gross. But you just have to take it easy when you do.
