I learned today that it was in fact safety wired but that the casing halves themselves somehow vibrate, shake and otherwise shift. Looking at the unit you can see that there are a number of pieces that are sandwiched together ( stator I believe) and it is these pieces that start to float after a while. My newly overhauled alternator clearly states that the bolts should be torqued at 10 hrs, then at 100 hrs. thereafter to 70 - 85 inch pounds.
