I can concur with Kevin that using an FAA examiner rather than a DPE is a viable choice. I did my ride with an examiner out of the Pittsburgh FSDO and he was most accomodating, even driving 3 hours each way from his office to my home field. There are a few in the bureaucracy who actually want to help.
