Angry Front wheel wabble

Help

i have a 1973 337GP n79c and have recently had the front wheel strut worked on twice, and it still wabbles on take off's and landings. Yes I can do a soft field landing and pull the yoke back to my chest to keep the weight off, but i can not believe this is the only solution.

Someone told me to use the larger O2 strut - any ifor on this option would be helpful.

Did you have the strut worked on, or the shimmy dampner? It sounds like your shimmy dampner needs to be serviced. You don't need another strut, you need a qualified mechanic to repair it.

I have had the shimmy dampner serviced twice in five years on my 73 P337. It is a bitch to get to, and really is best done during the annual when then aircraft is jacked.

Don't change struts, change mechanics.

If the shimmy dampener gets a clean bill of health, consider the front wheel balance.

The wheel is typically balanced statically (not spinning). The best way to do it is to take it to a motorcycle shop and have then do a dynamic balance - be careful as this is not technically an “FAA approved procedure,” but the results can be excellent.

I'd have to disagree with Kevin about the wheel usually being balanced statically instead of dynamically. It's been my experience that the wheel assembly often isn't balanced; it's just assembled and installed. A few dollars at the motorcycle shop can make a big difference. In my neighborhood, there is also a chain of tire stores that has the equipment to dynamically balance small wheels.

sometime the arm that is connected to the shimmy dampner and the rudder pedal get bent ever so slightly and makes the nose tire dance all over the place. look at the hines fitting that is usally where it is bent
