Hurricane Sandy

Out website is hosted by a company called Fluid Hosting. They don't actually own a computer any more. Like so many other companies, they rent space from a big server farm, or data center. The data center they rent from is a company called Equinix, and our system sits on the NY2 server.

NY2 is currently running on generator. Equinix says no problem, but I know of at least one data center (111 8th Ave) where the temp got to 100 degrees (bad for computers), and another that had a generator fail, and went down, taking down 14,000 web sites.

All this is temporary, like everything in life. They are sure they have enough diesel fuel, and the generator is running fine.

The significance of this hurricane to NYC, and the data centers, can not be understated.

In 2002, Richard Clarke, then special advisor to the president for cyberspace security, described their importance in a speech. He said, "Transatlantic fiber lands at about 10 different places in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Long Island and New Jersey that, after having landed, it all goes to one of two facilities -- 60 Hudson St. or 111 8th Ave in lower Manhattan."

Just an FYI, but until power is restored in NYC and NJ, there may be internet problems.
