fuel pump

sent my rear engine fuel pump to QAA for overhaul and just got back an email with two pieces of info:
- your pump has too much rust and cannot be repaired economically so we can scrap here or return to you
- oh ya, we never mentioned it earlier but we now want to charge $110 for having cracked it open to tell you it is scrap, have a nice day

p/n on my fuel pump is 649368-28a1, I think there is a newer model as well that works on the TSIO-360AB engine that ends in -65a1?

new is almost 5K, found a rebuilt at Avial for around 2.5K

Any other thoughts on sources? My engine has close to 1400 hours in the last 6 years so overhaul (or upgrade soon...but for now I need to fly.

just open to ideas on something more economical than the 2.5K option

-Robert

I'm not an owner (yet!), but, in the PARTS SOURCES section of this board, I've heard nothing but good things about:

Don Neiser at Commodore Aerospace

He might have just what you're looking for!

Pretty normal procedure out in the industry today, did they not have a core or rebuilt to offer and wave the bench charge?

update

Herb - no, QAA did not tell me about any inspection fee, just sent me an invoice for $110 and said do you want us to scrap it her or ship it back...I don't accept that as "standard practice". I'm gonna pay the $110, but think they should seriously reconsider how they handle this type of thing, or others should go elsewhere

As for overall update - I will send more detailed post once it is all installed but basically I think I have a unit coming overnight from D&G, and they were a pleasure to do business with (thus far).
