vacuum pumps

Hey guys, we have (2) vacuum pumps on these beasts, I had another A/I installed, vacuum type, wish it were more in my scan. I know I know should have been an electric one.... Did that after A/I erected very slow one CLEAR night. Guy, old72driver....

Check your boots for pinholes and small rips. The boots are under vacuum and anything that gets into these openings will most likely end up going through the pump. also don't let any oil or cleaning solvent get on them.

I inflated the boots and checked for leaks they were okay.

The pump is a 441CC I believe and they are notorious for short life. I have been told not to bother overhauling just buy new. Overhaul is around 6 bills. Any opinion on this? I need to get at it this week.

I got one of the electric AI's installed, an RC Allen model, for $1800 total (includes the avionics shop's charges). I like it very much and it's comforting to have the backup.

My A/C runs OK on either pump, so failure of one is mostly a matter of noticing it before the other might happen to go, too.

Mine are also wet pumps, which last and last and last. I'm thinking that yours are dry, Bob - in the later models? (Mine is a '67 turbo).

they are dry pumps and are larger due to the boots. I would like to get rid of the vacuum AI.

I have boots, too, but so far as I remember the pumps are wet pumps.

Now that airborn is not making vacuum pumps anymore we us the pumps from aero accessories (1-336-449-5054)
The overhaul or build new.
I installed an overhauled 441cc in July and it now has @ 250 hrs. on it and appears to be doing ok. These pumps have the inspection hole in the back so you can check the vanes for wear.

They are dry pumps on the "P" and have a larger volume if the AC has boots. There is no alternates or STC'D electric replacments. We are stuck with OEM production.......

Is that a RAPCO pump they sell or is it their own?

New or rebuilt? is rebuilt a consideration?

I think they are the only ones building new pumps at this time.
Their rebuilt or overhauled pumps seem to last just as long as new.

Looking thru my records, I changed the front because it failed back in 2/95, it was a 441 CC from Aircraft Supply and Repair in West Mifflin PA. It was $459.00 exchanged. It now has 500+ hours on it.. I recently changed the rear 2/02 just because it had 700+ hrs on it and the starter drive was out. that one came thru Van Bortel Aircraft (Ken) It cost $350 exchanged.. My Mech suggested the O/H ones because you have (2).. Had to wait a month or so for the core credit thru V.B... Guy, old72driver....

There is only one supplier now. new is 1500 list and rebuilt is 637 including core (100$). Probably good to stagger them for safetly but murphy does work that way <G>. Cheap at twice the price ;>)

guess i will opt for rebuilt as there is a 500$ difference.
