Annual and Overhaul Costs

How much do your annuals cost? How much does an engine overhaul cost? These questions are asked repeatedly. If you don't want to think about it, I understand, but if you wouldn't mind posting the follwing info, I will summarize it and average it for a FAQ. If you prefer not to make the information public, and would like to send it to webmaster@337skymaster.com, I would appreciate that, and will add it to my figures.

Please post the type aircraft you have:

336
'65 to '72 Normally aspirated
'67 to '71 Turbo
'73 to '80 Normally aspirated
'78 to '80 Turbo
P337

Please also post your average annual cost, or the cost of each years annual for the time you have owned it, and the shop rate that you pay.

Also, please include your engine overhaul costs, if you have had the pleasure...

AND FINALLY, PLEASE INCLUDE THE LOCATION WHERE YOUR MAINTENANCE IS DONE. Costs vary a lot by where you live, and this information will be very helpful.

Don't forget the shop rate.

My information will be in the next post.

Thanks!

Kevin

I have a '73 P337. During almost all the time that I have owned it, I had it maintained by an expensive, but high quality shop. Annuals ran about $6000 per year, except the first one (that the previous owner paid for the repairs on), which was $10,000+, but also included upgrades to the airplane.

My most recent annual was owner assisted to the maximum level possible for a non-A&P, using the same mechanics that worked for the old shop, which is now closed (the owner retired). This annual cost me $1800, plus about 40 hours of my own labor time.

I have done three engine changes on this airplane. The first two I paid for, the third Continental paid for under warranty. The complete overhaul of all accessories, including the prop, as well as R&R labor cost for the engine, and a factory reman from Continental, cost $25K for each engine two years ago. The labor that Continental paid for the third engine change was $2700.

I also owned a '65 337, that was maintained by the same shop. Annuals for that airplane ran about $4000.

The expensive shop charged $50 dollars an hour for labor, and was not shy about charging for each and every hour worked.

My current mechanic does the work in my hangar with my help for $30 per hour. The IA who did the annual charged $500 for the inspection.

I am located in Hillsboro, Oregon.

I have a '73 P337 for 6 years. During the first 4 years that I have owned it, I had it maintained by an expensive, but high quality shop. Annuals ran about $4500 per year, (the shop had a flat rate of $2500 for the inspection, the rest was for fixing things they found).

My most recent annual was owner assisted to the maximum level possible for a non-A&P, using an A&P on the field to show me how to do things, to do what I couldn't, and to inspcet my work. This annual cost me $2200, including a pitot static check.

I have done one engine change on this airplane, because the rear engine developed a crack in the crankcase. I used a factroy reman, reused my turbo and controller and prop governor. The engine was about $20,000, and the labor was about $3,000 (all new mounts, repainted engine mount, all new baffles, all new hoses included in that amount).

I spend about $1,000 per year for incidental maintenance, including at least two oil changes, (doing them myself now).

My original shop charged $60 dollars an hour for labor, and was not shy about charging for each and every hour worked. As a matter of fact, I am sure they charged me at times for down-time and work done on other things. They also missed things at times, some of lwhich could have been very dangerous, and some of which were just irritating (for example, after spending $4,000 for an annual, I would expect the air pressure in my tires to be at the specified value, but that was not the case a couple of times.)

My current mechanic does the work in my hangar with my help for $30 per hour. The IA who checked my A&P for the annual charged $200 for the inspection.

I am located in Aurora, Illinois, about 40 miles west of Chicago, and close enough to be affected by "big city" prices.

Mark

69 337D

I have a 69 337D,
My first Annual cost me $5K+, and the engine change was an additional $5K. We bought the plane needing a new front engine. Got it from Airpower.

My second annual cost $2200, including the inspection, and it was owner assisted for much of the time. I took all the access plates out, and the interior. I was there for 1 day of the inspection, and not there for 2 days. They changed the alternate air box on the front engine, and 2 motor mounts on the rear engine, along with 1 tire, and a couple of hoses.

I do my own, assisted, oil changes. The place I did the last annual at sells me the oil, and I do it there. cost about $65 for an oil change, and I am religious about doing it every 25 hours. Oil is cheap, engines are expensive.

The only other major items we've had to fix were the radar display, about $2200, and the second transponder, about $350. This year I need to do the Spar AD, and new control cables.

Larry,

Thanks (and thanks to Mark as well). Larry, for the record I think you have the work done in Grand Rapids, MI, correct? What is the shop rate?

RMY

I keep my plane in GRR,and the first annual and engine change was there, Rapid Air. Subsequent maintenance has been done at RMY, Marshall, Mi. Shop rate at GRR was (I think) $85/hr. Shop rate at Marshall is $45/Hr. They have an AI at Marshall who retired from Duncan Aviation. He supervises 2 other A&P's. He was a King Air specialist.

Hoo ahh, $85 per hour. That is the highest shop rate I have heard of in aviation, but I'm probably just uninformed. I can see why you switched...

Thanks for the info.

SHOP RATE AT RAPID GRR

I HAVE BEEN A VERY LUCKY OWNER
I HAVE A 68 337 NORMAL
FIRST ANNUAL IN BOISE, 1987, INCLUDING REAR PROP OVERHAUL (ONE OVERHAULED BLADE) $9500.00
AFTER THAT I WORKED WITH A SHOP IN BURLEY, ID AND ANNUALS AVERAGED $2000.00 - $2500.00

CHANGED THE REAR ENGINE IN 97 FACTORY REMAN $25K + $3000.00 INSATLL INCLUDING THE ANNUAL FOR THAT YEAR.

SOMETIME AROUND 99 I TOOK IT TO A SHOP IN TWIN FALLS (HOMETOWN) AND THEY GOT ME FOR AROUND $6000.00 I REALLY GOT TAKEN BUT IT'S ALWAYS GOOD TO HAVE ANOTHER SHOP TAKE A LOOK. THEY DID FIND A FEW ITEMS THAT HAD BEEN OVERLOOKED.

NEVER REALLY DID AN OWNER ASSIST. SOUNDS LIKE A GOOD IDEA

SINCE I HAVE BEEN HERE IN THE GREAT STATE OF MICHIGAN I HAVE ONLY HAD ONE ANNUAL PERFORMED $2425.00 TOOK MY PROPS OFF FOR OVERHAUL AND THEY WERE CONDEMNED. HENCE THE NEW MT COMPOSITES WHICH TOOK FROM JULY 2002 TILL JANUARY 2003 TO GET (WELL I DIDN'T ORDER THEM UNTIL AUGUST) AND SO NOW I'M GOOD UNTIL JAN 04.
I JUST HAD A STARTER ADAPTOR REPLACED ON THE FRONT $4139.00 INCLUDES A $2000.00 CORE WHICH I HOPE TO GET BACK.

SHOP RATE IN IDAHO AT BYI WAS $50
GREAT SHOP OUT THERE

Annual

Just came out of annual on '76 337G. Cost about $6,600 of which about $3,300 was parts: new muffler, exhaust risers for RE and 12 spark plugs and other incidentals including a plastic vertical stabalizer tip. Inspection was $1,500 and labor rate $65. This was at AWM (West Memphis, AR) with local IA mechanic. This is his first annual on this plane and he said going in he was going to be extra critical the first time.

He had just finished an annual on a '78 337G and cost was about the same but owner paid for some parts directly so all parts were not included - but installing a reman was. Very good mechanic and been at this location a long time. Familiar with 337's but not what I would a super expert on them (e.g. GMAS.)

Last 3 years was done at Clarksdale Aviation at CKM (Clarksdale, MS.) Cost somewhat less but not significantly considering parts ordered this time.

Considerable maintenance done between annuals (July '02 to July '03) including spark plugs, ignitiion harness, mag overhaul, etc. by CKM mechanic.

I own a 1967 Turbo (T337B). My annuals average about $4000 each year, using a good, smaller shop north of Salt Lake City.

(Using any of the local, big-city shops, adds at least another $2000 to that.)

The average would be higher if you figured in one year with a big spike when it cost me $12,000. So figure that in if you wish. The lowest I've had was $1800 one year. I have had the plane for about 6 years.

Unhappy Annual Cost

I own a 337H 1978 model non-turbo model. I have owned it for 4 years. My shop O & N in Factoryville, Pa. has a shop rate of $65/Hr. Just the annual cost on labor runs about $2800.00. Now you add the oil, filters for 2 engines plus all the things they find wrong $$$$$$$$$$. My average annual comes out to be around $6000 each year. That did not include the $12000 paint job. $9000 total new interior. $7000 to get auto-pilot working. The extra to get the landing gear to work properly $2000. The extra
$2000 to get the charging system to work properly. Oh the upgrade on the instrument panel we won't include $$$$$$. But it all works good now. Last year I did a pilot assisted annual. I removed all inspection covers, removed the total interior including floor inspection covers. I found two problems the A & P did not find. One problem was a hole in the rear engine muffler that was 1/4 inch wide and 4 inches long. I noticed the white chalky coating from burnt fuel on the side of engine which lead me to it. It was hard to see next to the rib on the muffler. He over looked it but I kept looking till I found it. He was supprised when I found it. That was another $2000 cost for new muffler. I also found the metal gas line, from the fuel primer, worn half way through where it was rubbing against the metal baffling. That was just above the hole in muffler. Can you imagine the fire if that rubbed all the way through. He still charged the $2800 for labor. Dale Campbell

The shop I'm using still charges $45 or $50 per hour (great, eh?).

I only put in info about annual costs since that was the the main question, but I usually spend from $1000 to $2000 each year on something or the other between annuals.

I'm lucky. My A&P charges me $35 per hour and doesn't pad the hours. He works on the ramp at TMB, in Miami, but has access to a hangar for retraction tests and the like. Did I tell you he used to own a Skymaster and has thousands of hours flying it? Which means that he knows the aircraft inside out and likes working on them. Moreover, he knows what needs immediate attention and what can wait till next annual. We then work with an IA for annuals who has been inspecting my airplane for years.

On parts, I search and pay directly for all the parts needed, looking for used whenever possible (click on "Purchasing Parts" on my "backup" Skymaster website at www.SkymasterUS.com to see the protocols I follow).

As a result of the foregoing, my annual costs are typically under $2,000 per year. The labor is around $750 (including my A&P and the IA) and the parts average under $1,000. (This suggests that you Northerners could bring your airplane down to Miami and have a free vacation while my guy does your annual!)

To be fair, that doesn't cover all yearly maintenance costs. For instance, this past year I felt that the prop governors were drifting, found in the record books that they hadn't been overhauled in 10 years and had them overhauled for a total of around $1,000.

Overall, I think my yearly maintenance expenses are probably in the $3,000 to $4,000 range.

Ernie
