Gathering of Twin Tails

Every Skymaster pilot knows that two (2) tails are better than one. What we may not realize is that there are other planes with two (2) tails. Some notable, some not so notable.

This morning, I got a phone call from a gentleman from the CAF, the Commerative Air Force, to tell me they are having a "Gathering of Twin Tails" on May 12, 2007, in Midland, TX. It will feature their B-24, one of 2 flying in the world, as well as other notable twin tailed airplanes.

I'll have more information later today, but for those of you headed for Daytona, it might be a good place for you to stop.

More information, as promised.

FLY-IN TO HONOR B-24 UNVEILING

MIDLAND, Texas (Dec. 12, 2006) – The B-29/B-24 Squadron of the Commemorative Air Force will host a Twin Tails Fly-in May 12, 2007, to unveil modifications to the CAF’s B-24A, "Ol 927." (Formally known as "Diamond Lil")

This airplane (serial number 18) was originally intended to be a B-24A before being diverted to the British, changing the plane’s designation to an LB-30 (land bomber). Shortly after being delivered in May 1941, the aircraft was damaged in a landing accident and the factory took the airplane back for repairs. At that time, they converted the bomber into a transport aircraft (the prototype for the C-87). It has remained in that configuration for it's entire life...until now.

In late October 2006, B-29/B-24 Crew Chief Gary Austin and his crew began work to return the aircraft to its original B-24A bomber configuration. This includes the installation of bomb racks and bombs, newly refurbished bombardier's compartment, and new paint (original scheme). The reconfiguration also included adding the tail gun, tunnel gun, and waist gun positions, among many other changes.

The unveiling of the airplane's new configuration, along with it's new nose art, will take place at the Gathering of Twin Tails, at the Midland International Airport (MAF), Midland, TX. Any aircraft with the twin tail arrangement is invited to come and help honor one of it's own. The event will be on May, 12, 2007 and will start at 8 a.m. and the unveiling will be at 10 a.m. There will be food and refreshments available, along with the opportunity to purchase a ride in a variety of Warbirds*.

*Depending on weather and which aircraft attend the event
