Thinking about taking a skymaster down to the DR and flying around in country for a week or so. Anybody done any flying down there?

Thanks,

I haven't flown in the DR, but a) I've flown by its coastline, ferrying a Skymaster from the Virgin Islands to Florida and b) I know people who do fly there often, and I just called them on your behalf.

There is nothing unusual to report. Fuel prices are comparable to the U.S., 100LL is widely available (but make sure you have up-to-date charts and use the Internet to get airport phone numbers, etc.), there are no landing or tie-down fees, and security is good (comparable to the U.S.).

t337C to the DR

I flew my T337C into the Dominican Republic last October. In fact, it made the front page of the national newspaper ! We went along with about 15 other planes as part of a fly-in hosted by Jim Parker at Caribbean Flying Adventures (Jim@CaribbeanFlyingAdventures.com). I disagree with Ernie's assessment that there are no landing or tie-down fees, in fact the guys who joined us from the Puerto Rico flying club said it is very common to have 'services' suddenly added to your bill when you get ready to leave. Overall we had a GREAT experience ourselves, but really advise you to contact someone like Jim to get some advice - I bet he'll give you some for flying yourself as well as offering to send an invite for the next fly-in.
In any case, beautiful country, warm people, and great place to visit. Keep us updated on your progress.

Good update, Robert. My intel was based on talking to Dominicans and others who fly frequently to the DR, and the no-fee policy is a government edict. It's likely that the FBOs don't charge those who know the regs but take advantage of visitors who don't.
