Good resource for getting out old screws
This site has a lot of great tools to get those old wing panel screws out.
I was successful with air drill/screw knocker/acr bit combo. https://www.yardstore.com/

Went to the site and saw a “speed handle” pop right up. Neat trick I learned on mine from the mechanics is a Phillip bit on the speed handle. Soak screw with oil, put lapping compound on bit to increase traction on screw and rock back and forth tightening and loosening.
Surprisingly you can tighten sometimes to break the screw loose. |

Here’s the speed handle:
https://www.yardstore.com/speed-handle-3-8 Then use 3/8 drive bit holder (so you can change the bits if you break them): https://www.yardstore.com/catalogsea...%2F8+drive+bit Also, I found that if you break a bit off in the screw, it lifts out if you spray carb cleaner/starting fluid/ether and follow up with a dental pick. Guess the low boiling point gasses underneath it plus the jet of the spray. Don’t try to drill broken bit stuck in there, they’re hardened. Worst worst worst case you can grind/drill with a narrow cylindrical grinding stone and a dremel if broken bit in screw head. But best not to put enough force on to break a bit and try everything else first. If you use screw extractor, be sure to drill deep enough and wide enough to get a good grip and not with the smallest one. If it snaps you will be grinding for quite awhile since they’re hardened as well. Last edited by wslade2 : 01-16-23 at 12:22 AM. |
